About

Ali

Ali had worked her way up the ranks at a supermarket before the opportunity to buy Mr. Decorating came up - which her and Steve took! Ali loves to see the painters complete and take pride in their great work and works hard to ensure that everything is clearly communicated between customers and the company. When she's not working, Ali loves spending time with Steve and their grandson, or taking the caravan away somewhere peaceful.

What do you enjoy  most about the work you do?

I get to work alongside Steve (my best friend and husband) and Henry, they can drive me mad but I love working with them. We laugh a lot… usually at each other's expense.

What does a day at Mr. Decorating look like for you?

It starts with prioritising emails that need actioned, make coffee, get the quotes ready to deliver to our clients, make coffee, filing, make coffee, do invoicing, make coffee (well that's not true as Steve makes the coffee).

What's your proudest  moment at Mr. Decorating?

I love it when an apprentice has finished their time and is handed their certificate, they work so hard and the qualification is so well deserved.

What values does Mr. Decorating instill in the team?

Standard of workmanship and taking pride in their work. They get huge job satisfaction when they get to stand back and look at a job well done.

Where do you see the industry heading in the next 5-10 years?

Dunedin’s market has traditionally been very stable, there is a huge amount of growth and development happening. Finding the right staff is always going to be an issue. We need the ongoing support of government to promote apprenticeships in all the trades.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Spending time with our little grandson is probably the top of the list, and love being able to take our caravan away and spend time with friends.

Anything else you wanted to say?

I'm so grateful to have the staff we do, they are an eclectic, awesome bunch. If you're lucky enough to have great staff, you'll have a great business!
